Dawn at Rookwood

The silence after the bell

Finch sets his bag down. For the first time, he has no explanation.

At 8:30 he brought poisoned tea to silence the man who would expose his forged prescriptions. Vale fell at 8:40, breaking the clock. Finch’s blue candle released the bell cord at nine, shifting the apparent time of death into his library alibi.

You lay out the ledger, Martha’s account, the broken clock, the letter and the matching wax. Clara’s receipt places her twenty minutes away. No single suspicion decided this case: the evidence fits together.

By dawn the road is clear. Constable Price takes Finch away. Clara opens the curtains. Martha puts the kettle on. This time, you watch it boil.
